Choreography

« back

This is mostly novelty material I've written for fun; you will be hard-pressed to find anything resembling the traditional definition of "choreography".

a sequence that always resolves

This is a "universal sequence": it can start in any symmetric 2x4, and always ends in a "circle left n/8" resolve. (It can be pasted directly into sd.)

It even has some bonus properties: every call has someone moving (i.e. no "leads trade" with no leaders, or "funny X" where nobody gets it), there's no use of absolute directions ("headliners", "face the music"), and everything is kept at 90° angles (getting to lines is easier with "1/8 in").

1/4 in
1/4 stable swap around
crazy circulate
echo ends 1/4 in

boys trade
cast off 1/4
leads u turn back
ends start pass the ocean
slide thru
bend the line

heads trade
melded as couples step thru

#2 girl run
#4 boy run
ends 1/4 in
funny circulate
ends 1/4 in
trailers trade
stable #2 girl run
centers slide thru
leads trade
centers pass thru
press ahead
centers slide thru

#1 girl run
#3 boy run
ends 1/4 in
funny circulate
ends 1/4 in
trailers trade
stable #1 girl run
centers slide thru
leads trade

bring us together
once removed #1 couple run
once removed #2 couple run
leads u turn back

Here's some rough intuition for how it works. The first block turns an arbitrary 2x4 into facing lines. The second block ensures the facing lines are made of normal couples. The third block gets a trade by of normal couples with heads as ends and sides as centers. The fourth block pairs the sides with their partners. The fifth block does the same for the heads. Finally, the last block ensures the couples are in sequence (at which point "circle home" can be called).

illegal sequences

Here are a few sequences with totally illegal calls that hopefully are intuitive enough anyway. (The starred call is the one in question.)

[plus]

sides pass the ocean
sides left swing thru, heads half sashay

[advanced]

heads star thru
boys run
triple scoot and roll
centers counter rotate
*outroll circulate
finish chain down the line
half tag

crossover circulate
allemande left (to home)

amateur night, hard plus (2022-08-16)

Here's a patter tip I wrote and called for a Tech Squares amateur night. Tech Squares has lots of challenge and strong plus dancers, so these skew very weird/hard.

quadruple pass thru
first dancer go left, next go left, next go left, next go left, single file promenade home (1/2)

I also did a singer, with a custom edit of Lights by Ellie Goulding (which I probably shouldn't post here because it'd be illegal or something).
